A hidden gem in the streets of the small village outside the Sant’Andrea gate is undoubtedly the old wash-house. Or rather one of Rimini’s old wash-houses. Yes, because until the post-war period the city made up for the lack of running water at home by performing washing and sanitation functions through a widespread system of public wash-houses. This is, therefore, but the last one left (although in reality it has been completely rebuilt), bearing witness to a life that today seems very distant but which was part of the everyday life of the vast majority of the people of Rimini. The structure, fed by a perennial spring in the Padulli locality, was connected to the spring by a ditch, hence the name of the street with which the old wash-house is – almost – cornered: via delle Fosse. Originally uncovered, the artificial wash-house was equipped with a cover during the restoration of 1901 and remained active until the 1960s.
