Since May 2021, a giant metal marlin fish has towered in San Giuliano a Mare, at the corner of viale Ortigara and via Briolini, caught on a fisherman’s hook, made of hand-welded salvaged material, installed on the top of a building.
The epic scene resembles one from The Old Man and the Sea, Hemingway’s masterpiece, in which the old fisherman finally manages to catch a giant marlin fish after a long struggle with the animal.
The large metal sculpture, called Plotzcky, is about 8.70 metres wide and 5.15 metres high and was created by artist Mauro di Giovanni, painted and restored by Andrea Gisenti of the Mutoid Waste Company, a company of artists based in Santarcangelo di Romagna that moulds incredible works of art by reusing scraps of mechanical parts. Also by Mutoid, signed Lu Lupan, is the creation of the figure of the fisherman.
