The Benelli castle, after some careful restorations, has reopened its doors in June 2023, offering the opportunity to learn more about this ancient dwelling.
The eighteenth-century building evokes suggestive atmospheres from the Renaissance, thanks to its rooms richly decorated with frescoes, the green of the maritime pines and the imposing horse stables which remind of ancient times and a lordly lifestyle.
Built on the foundations of an ancient medieval castle from the eleventh century, the Benelli castle is the focal point of an area rich in history: before, the Castrum Libani stood here, one of Malatesta family’s hunting lodges. It was count Spina who had it built around the mid-nineteenth century on the base of the ancient medieval building, ending up with the current result; the Benelli family has been the owner of the dwelling since 1917.
From the Entrance hall to the “Studio delle Aquile” (Study room of the Eagles), from the Dining Hall to the “Sala degli stemmi” (Hall of the crests), the “Salone dei Gigli” (Great Hall of the Lilies) and the towers, the Benelli castle now features frescoed rooms which have all been elegantly restored.
The garden and the ancient horse stables surround the building, revoking the concept of “garden-country” developed during the Renaissance and currently present thanks to the cultivation of wheat, corn and sunflowers made possible by a still-active, award-winning farming agency.
Overall, Benelli Castle represents a unique architectural composition which, over the years, has preserved a strong and perceptible relationship between building and country, the synthesis of a delicate balance – which has been lost in other such places– of particular formal suggestiveness.
