Santarcangelo hides an underground and mysterious history, where cavities, shafts, tunnels and galleries establish another city under the one’s visible, and it is unknown for many people. Describing the feelings when exploring the deepest parts of this world, isolated in its ancient calmness, is impossible. However, it's closely tied to reality.
A guided tour inside the monumental cave is not to be missed: a journey back in time, a sort of labyrinth, to discover ancient legends and exciting tales.
Let yourself be seduced by the evocative atmosphere and your imagination will lead you to imagine ancient religious rites and solemn processions inside, barely illuminated by the glimmer of torches hanging on the walls. You will be able to smell the intoxicating scent of wine, aged and stored in ancient barrels, once kept here. It will be a truly unforgettable experience for you!
Visitors are guided through tunnels and rooms in a kind of labyrinth and are projected into a distant time (we suggest you to wear comfortable shoes, because the path is slightly rough and an appropriate clothing at a constant temperature of 13 degrees). The tour continues with the entrance at the Balacchi Square archaeological site. Here the guide explains the perfectly preserved mediaeval 'Casamatta', once located under the ancient gate of San Michele, the main entrance to the Malatesta walls.
